Bringing Education to the Twenty-First Century
INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN for Higher Education
Available in both digital and physical format on Amazon. The goal of this book is not to teach you to be an instructional designer, but to give you a set of ID tools to help propel your content to a level that your students will appreciate. Today's students are digital natives and we need to deliver a content in a manner that is logical and convenient to them instead of expecting them to learn in a manner that is comfortable for us. While this book specifically deals with ID in the college setting, if you combine the principles within the book with a skill set in pedagogy or andragogy, it can easily be applied to K12 or corporate education settings.
Who Am I?
I am an educator, a veteran, and a lifelong student. I try my best to take the lessons I have learned from my military and volunteer service and apply them to my craft as an educator. I believe students learn best through doing and I always try to incorporate practical application into my lessons. I keep up with the latest tech trends to ensure that I am able to instruct students in a manner that is compatible with their pursuits outside of the classroom.
Out of the Military...
After a decade of service in the military, the time had come when it became necessary for me to move on to other pursuits. Although I would leave the uniform behind, the invaluable skills and traits I attained during my time in service would stay with me for the rest of my days.
...Into the Classroom
My favorite aspect of being a leader in the Army was teaching, coaching, and mentoring young soldiers. I knew I wanted to parlay these aspects of service into my new career path and I could think of no better way to do this than by molding young minds in the field of education. Students are certainly a far cry from the soldiers to which I had become accustomed but they are by no means any less worthy of my dedicated service. Now that I work with veterans in higher education, I believe that I am getting the best of both worlds and I have found my passion in life.
Where You Can Find Me
I currently work as the Director of the Veteran Resource Center at Western Oregon University where I endeavor to get student veterans connected to any and all resources they need to be successful in their academic pursuits and beyond.
